A hair extension scrunchie is a hair tie, scrunchie or clip with extension hair that you put around your own bun or ponytail. What is a hair extension scrunchie?

Hair extension scrunchie is the umbrella term for extension hair attached to a bun or ponytail you've already made. You'll also find it called a messy bun scrunchie, messy bun hair piece, scrunchie with hair or hair tie with hair. There are four common types:

How to put on a hair extension scrunchie

  1. Make a ponytail at the height you want your bun: high for a statement messy bun, low for an elegant bun at the nape.
  2. Twist your hair into a loose bun and secure it with a thin hair tie. The more hair in the bun, the better the scrunchie stays in place.
  3. Slip on the scrunchie around the bun, just like a regular scrunchie. Wrap it once more if it feels loose.
  4. Shape with your fingers. Pull the curls apart so the extension hair blends with your own and hides the attachment.
  5. Finish the details. Pull out a few strands at the temples and nape for a more natural look. Add a couple of bobby pins if you'll be wearing it all day.

How to choose the right shade

The shade is the most important choice. A scrunchie that matches your hair looks like your own hair; one that doesn't stands out straight away.

  • Look at your lengths, not your roots. The scrunchie sits against the lengths of your hair, so that's the colour to match.
  • Torn between two shades? Choose the lighter one for a modern, beautiful ombre effect.
  • Consider the undertone. Warm tones (golden, copper) and cool tones (ash, platinum) should match your hair.
  • Have highlights or balayage? Choose a mix shade or the colour that dominates.
  • Compare in daylight. Indoor lighting makes most shades look warmer.

Synthetic or human hair?

Hair extension scrunchies come in both synthetic and human hair. Here's how they generally differ:

  • Synthetic hair keeps its curls and shape even after washing, is easier to care for and costs less. It usually can't handle ordinary heat tools unless it's specifically heat-resistant.
  • Human hair can be heat-styled and coloured, but needs more care and has to be restyled after every wash. It also costs more.

For a scrunchie that looks the same every time you put it on, synthetic hair is often the practical choice.

How to care for your hair extension scrunchie

  • Detangle gently. Use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb and start at the ends. Never brush curly extension hair with a regular brush, or it will frizz.
  • Wash it when it needs it, for example when it feels heavy with styling products. Use lukewarm water and a mild shampoo without harsh sulfates, and rinse thoroughly.
  • Let it air dry without twisting or rubbing the hair. Shape the curls with your fingers while it dries.
  • Store it in a bag or on a hook so it doesn't get tangled up with other things.
  • Don't sleep in it. Friction against the pillow is the most common cause of tangles.

Common problems and solutions

  • The bun slips: make the base bun tighter, wrap the scrunchie around once more and secure with two or three bobby pins.
  • The attachment shows: pull the extension hair apart with your fingers and let a little of your own hair fall over it.
  • The hair has tangled: wash, apply conditioner and gently detangle with your fingers from the ends upwards.
  • The shade stands out against your hair: pull out more of your own strands around the bun, or switch to a shade closer to your lengths.

Will it stay in all day?

Yes, as long as the bun underneath is secure. Use a couple of bobby pins if you're going to work out, dance or wear it for a long time.
