How to remove tape-in extensions without damaging your hair
Tape-in extensions should never be pulled out. With a remover made for tape-in extensions, the tabs release in a few minutes without taking your own hair with them. It takes about 30–60 minutes for a full head, and afterwards the extensions can be cleaned, re-taped and put back in. Here we go through how to do it, step by step.
When should tape-in extensions be removed?
- When the tabs sit 2–3 cm from the scalp, usually after 6–8 weeks, and need moving up.
- When you want a break from extensions.
- When a tab has started to come loose or sits crooked.

What you need
- Remover for tape-in extensions – available as a spray or liquid.
- A tail comb for parting the hair
- A few sectioning clips to hold the hair out of the way
- A fine-tooth comb or extension brush
- Shampoo for washing out residue afterwards
- New extension tape (refill) if you're putting the hair back in
How to remove tape-in extensions – step by step
- Brush through your hair. Start at the ends and hold the hair at the tabs, so there are no tangles when you begin.
- Section the hair. Start at the top or at the nape and work row by row. Clip up the rest of your hair.
- Apply remover to the tab. Spray or drip remover onto the tape, on both sides of the tab. Massage gently so it works its way in between the tape pieces.
- Wait a moment. Leave it for 30–60 seconds, or as directed on the packaging.
- Gently separate the tabs. Start at one corner and peel the two wefts apart. If it feels stiff, add more remover instead of pulling harder.
- Remove tape residue from your own hair. Drip a little remover onto the residue and comb it out with a fine-tooth comb.
- Wash your hair. Ideally shampoo twice so all the remover is gone, especially if you're putting the hair back in straight away.

How to prepare the extensions to go back in
With the right care, the same wefts can be put in 2–3 times and last up to 6 months.
- Remove the old tape. Drip remover onto the tape and peel it off. Gently scrape away any sticky residue with a comb or your fingernail.
- Wash the wefts. Wash the extensions in lukewarm water with a mild shampoo and let them dry completely, flat on a towel.
- Apply new tape (refill). Cut or choose tape the same width as the tab, press it onto the weft and leave the backing paper on until you put the hair in.
- Put the hair back in. Follow the steps in the guide how to apply tape-in extensions yourself.

Common mistakes
- Pulling the tabs off without remover. Your own hair comes with them and can break.
- Too little remover. The tape releases unevenly. Better a little too much than too little.
- Getting remover in the lengths. Keep it at the tab and wash thoroughly afterwards.
- Putting the hair back in without washing. Remover residue stops the new tape from sticking.
- Forcing out tangles. If tangles have formed at the tabs, loosen them with your fingers and a little conditioner before combing.
Frequently asked questions
How do you remove tape-in extensions?
With a remover made for tape-in extensions. Apply it to the tab, wait a moment and gently separate the wefts. Comb out the tape residue and wash your hair afterwards.
Can you remove tape-in extensions without remover?
We always recommend remover. In an emergency, oil (such as coconut oil) can soften the tape, but it's harder to wash out and takes longer. Never pull the tabs off dry.
Does removing tape-in extensions hurt?
No. With remover, the tape lets go by itself and it shouldn't pull. If it hurts, the tab needs more remover.
How long does it take?
Allow 30–60 minutes for a full head, plus time to wash your hair and re-tape if you're putting it back in.
Can I reuse the extensions?
Yes. Remove the old tape, wash the wefts and apply new tape. Tangled Tape Extensions are 100% Double Drawn Remy human hair and can be put in 2–3 times.
Should I choose tape or keratin if I want to remove the hair myself?
Tape. Keratin has to be removed by a hairdresser. Compare the methods in the guide tape or keratin.
After removal, it's gentle to wash with a mild shampoo without harsh sulfates, such as our Strengthening Hair Bars. Read more in the guide how to wash hair extensions.
